1.) Download the file “P4_Olympics_2012.sav” from LEARN and open it using SPSS software.

• The dataset contains data relating to the medal-winning performance of athletes from 204 countries in the 2012 London Olympics, together with socio-economic data about the countries. Data source: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/datablog/2012/jul/30/olympics-2012-alternative-medal-table

• There is no missing data or reverse coded data in this particular dataset.

• Refer to your lecture slides from Lecture 7 for detailed guidance on performing the SPSS analyses requested below.

2.) Refer to Lecture 6 for instructions how to perform. the following analyses. Calculate the Pearson correlations between the following nine variables:

· Note that the variable Total team size in 2012 Olympics is the aggregate of Female team size in 2012 Olympics and Male team size in 2012 Olympics, while Total medals won in 2012 Olympics is the aggregate of Gold medals won in 2012 Olympics, Silver medals won in 2012 Olympics, and Bronze medals won in 2012 Olympics. So, the variables Team_size and Medals_numbers will be highly correlated with their respective constituent variables.

· Look at your correlation matrix. Which of the following variables is most highly correlated with Total medals won in 2012 Olympics: Country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2011, Country's population in 2010, Total team size in 2012 Olympics?

· How large are these correlations?

· What do they signify?

3.) Using variables from the table, run a regression analysis to predict the dependent variable Total medals won in 2012 Olympics using the three independent variables: Country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2011, Country's population in 2010, and Total team size in 2012 Olympics (entered together).

· Collectively, how much variance do the three independent variables explain in the dependent variable Total medals won in 2012 Olympics?

· Which of the three independent variables are significant predictors of Total medals won in 2012 Olympics?

· Using the unstandardised regression coefficients, compile the regression equation.

· Using this equation, predict how many medals the Great Britain team will win in total in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, by substituting the following values for the three predictors:

o UK’s Gross Domestic Product in 2015: $2,678,000,000,000

o UK’s population in 2014: 64,100,000

o UK’s total team size in 2016 Olympics: 600

· How many medals will Great Britain win?
