Assignment Objectives:
This assignment examines the management of an individual project and, as such, will draw upon the skills, concepts, and models we have discussed in the course to apply them in a real-world setting. Analysis of the project should make use of models, concepts, and frameworks from the course lectures and your wider reading.
Project Selection:
Select a project where you feel you may have enough information to talk about. The project may be in the public, private, or third sector; small or large; completed, failed, or ongoing. The project could be one you were personally involved in, or one that you have observed in the media, etc. This is not a typical ‘research project’, so sources may be from your selected organization’s website, your knowledge of the project, your previous conversations with colleagues, government and consultancy reports as well as academic journal articles.
When analyzing your chosen project, it typically makes sense to provide a general overview of the project and to focus on at least 2 topic areas to allow you to get into a good level of depth (for example: stakeholder analysis and project monitoring and control). The focus should be on identifying lessons learned from other projects in the industry or that are transferable to other projects.
Think about the complexity of your selected project. Why do you think it is (was) complex? Please note that we have added a file on Project Complexity, and it is available in the Modules section. You should add graphs of project complexity as an Appendix or in the body of the text. Reflect on that project and try to answer, How can traditional Project Management tools and concepts help you deal with these complexities? At what point, traditional PM tools and frameworks were not enough to deal with the complexities? What other advanced or different tools would you suggest (research and explain them clearly - go beyond mentioning them and discuss the actual implementation). What tools or frameworks presented in class do you think may serve you better in your future career? What are your key learnings? Use figures to provide context and support your arguments.
In short, we want you to take this assignment as an opportunity to grow in your professional careers, beyond just learning PM topics and tools. Reflection and insights make us better.
