ASSIGNMENT 2 BRIEF

This is a team-based assessment, and students are expected to work on all aspects of it equally. Teams will consist of TWO students only. Each team must attempt all questions.

ENBU505 Assignment Two

Group Coursework 2: Estimation (100 marks total)

SCENARIO

A development site has received building consent for a total of 694 square meters (gross floor area) of six townhouses in Avondale, Auckland. Four townhouses will have an area of approximately 109 square meters each, and the remaining two will be 130 square meters and 128 square meters, respectively. The client has tasked you with preparing a pre-tender estimate for the property development before calling for tender submissions. The pre-tender estimate will be used as a benchmark for evaluating the returned tenders. In his brief, the client wants the estimate to reflect the scope of work and market conditions accurately and must be prepared with great accuracy. To achieve this, you will work in pairs to price the selected tender trades and provide a cost report to the senior quantity surveyor before compiling the final cost estimate.

Pricing Schedules of Quantities (SoQ)

a. Based on the client’s brief, prepare a pre-tender estimate for the following selected trades:

1. Plasterboard wall and ceiling linings      (50 marks)

2. Roofing           (40 marks)

Include all calculations of unit rates for items and labour constants. State any inclusions, exclusions, allowances, and assumptions (if any) included in the estimate.

Preparing a Cost Report

b. Prepare a cost report for the client and members of the project team, outlining the specific considerations included in the estimate. Advise the client on the limitation of the estimate.           (10 marks)

ASSIGNMENT CONDITIONS

This assignment involves pricing selected tender trades and reporting cost estimates. The priced tender trades must include calculating unit rates for items and labour constants. The cost report must detail the key aspects of the estimates.

DOCUMENT

• The schedules of quantities (SoQ) for the residential project are available on Canvas.

INSTRUCTIONS

• All priced SoQ must include evidence of rates build-up and produced using Microsoft (MS) Excel.

• The report must outline the basis of the estimate, components of the estimate, locational factors affecting the estimates, and the inclusions and exclusions of the cost estimate. The cost report should not exceed 300 words.

• The priced SoQ also must:

1. Include correct units of rate and all calculations of unit rates for items and labour constants,

2. Include the source of cost data and side notes (references to documents and available, relevant cost data),

3. Include inclusions, exclusions, allowances, and assumptions (if any) relevant to the trade, and

4. Demonstrate a consistent and logical approach to estimating.

• Submit your assessment in the following file formats:

1. Priced Schedules of Quantities (SoQ) in Microsoft (MS) Excel format.

2. Cost report in Microsoft (MS) Word format.

• Save each file with your GROUP NAME.

You are advised to consider the assessment criteria and ensure that these areas are covered in your coursework. Assessment grading will be according to the following criteria:

Grade Boundaries:

A + = 90%, A = 85%, A- = 80%, B+ = 75%, B = 70%, B- = 65%, C+ = 60%, C = 55%, C- = 50%, D < 50%

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Students shall work in a team.

• The assignment is to be submitted as per the submission format’s requirements and presented as a professional electronic document.

• The cost report should not exceed 300 words.

• This word limit is plus or minus 10% (this is a typical academic standard) and excludes contents page, reference list and any appendices.

• Exceeding the word limit by more than 10% will lead to the deduction of marks.

• The assignment must be submitted electronically ONLY through AUT Canvas and Turnitin on or before the above submission deadline. Turnitin will be used to check the originality of the report.

• All students should be aware of the School’s policy on plagiarism, collusion, latesubmission and special considerations.

• All submissions shall have a bibliography of references and sources used in the preparation of the project. Students must use the AUT APA referencing system when citing literature sources.

• All submissions should have a cover sheet identifying the course, the date and the student’s name.

• All submissions should be in Times New Roman, Arial, or a similar easy-to-read font, 12pt 1.5 spaced (excluding table of contents, tables, references list, and appendices).

PASS REQUIREMENTS

To pass the course, the student must complete and submit/present all summative assessments and achieve a C- overall grade.

LATE ASSESSMENTS HAND IN

School policy is a penalty given for late submission of assessments. 5% per day, up to a maximum of 5 days.
